School for Student Leadership

The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students’ home regions. There are three campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. Each school is designed to equip students with the skills to become leaders in the 21st century.

College Involvement

Hoppers Crossing Secondary College has been involved in the School for Student Leadership consecutively for the last 8 years. We endeavour to send a delegation of students each and every year.

Students involved in the program reside at one of the three School for Student Leadership campuses for the entirety of the term. The program focuses on personal development and team building.

In 2014, successful applicants attended the Gnurad-Gundidj campus in Term One. Their Community Learning project focuses on Environmental Sustainability. Working together with the College Council and broader local community, the students aim to make the school more environmentally friendly by installing solar panels on the Science Centre.

They have also been working on building a school Green Team and identifying areas of the school that require a little more of a green touch.

2015 will see 6 successful students attend the Snowy River Campus in Term 3. Their project topic is yet to be determined.

Selection

Each year in Term 2 the College applies to take part in the annual program. If selected, the Year 8 Coordinators and the Junior Program Manager will call for students who wish to apply to attend the following year. The selection process involves a written application followed by a formal interview.
